Answers to your questions about the FreeStyle Blood
Glucose Monitoring System.

What
is FreeStyle?

FreeStyle
represents a breakthrough in blood glucose monitoring
technology. FreeStyle is a blood glucose monitoring
device that is virtually pain-free and allows people
with diabetes to test on their forearm instead of their
fingertips. It achieves this by using a tiny sample,
just 0.3 microliters, a fraction of any other sample.Until recently, people with diabetes have had few
choices but to prick their fingers to get a blood
sample, which is very painful. Pain is one reason people
don't test blood glucose levels as often as they should.
Most people find the forearm testing enabled by
FreeStyle to be much less painful.

What
is unique about FreeStyle?

FreeStyle
is unique because the test uses the smallest blood
sample (the size of a pinhead) of any blood glucose
monitoring system available today. The test is virtually
pain-free and allows people with diabetes to test on
their forearm instead of their fingertips.

Is
FreeStyle non-invasive?

No.
A blood sample is still required. The FreeStyle system
is designed to be minimally invasive by utilizing an
extremely small blood sample—approximately 300
nanoliters. This amount represents a fraction of the
smallest sample requirement currently on the market. The
FreeStyle System also differs from most blood glucose
systems by enabling sampling from the forearms as
opposed to the fingers, where there are more pain
sensitive nerve endings.

How
can we prove FreeStyle is less painful than other blood
glucose monitors?

In
the clinical trials, 9 out of 10 people who tested with
the FreeStyle System said the test was less painful than
testing with their own meter.

What
is the measurement technology that is used with
FreeStyle?

FreeStyle
employs an innovative proprietary electrochemical
measurement that is designed to be very accurate with
small blood volumes. We call it Nano-Sample Technology.

What
is Nano-Sample Technology?

Nano-Sample
Technology describes our own proprietary blood glucose
measurement technology that can measure volumes in the
nanoliter range. Based on the pioneering work of Dr.
Adam Heller, this technology converts a blood sample's entire
glucose content into an electric charge. Previous
technologies only convert a portion of the glucose,
which means far more blood is needed for a sample.

What
is a nanoliter?

A
nanoliter is a very small fluid volume (one billionth of
a liter). In terms of blood glucose testing, 300
nanoliters is approximately the size of the head of a
common pin.

Does
FreeStyle measure blood glucose or interstitial glucose?

FreeStyle
measures whole capillary blood glucose and provides
plasma-calibrated results.

Does
FreeStyle provide plasma-calibrated or whole blood
calibrated results?

FreeStyle
provides plasma-calibrated results.

Does
FreeStyle read results in mg/dl or mmo/L?

FreeStyle
can provide results in either unit of measurement. You
simply enter the preferred unit of measurement on the
meter itself during set-up mode. Step-by-step
instruction is available in the Owner's Booklet..

Who invented and designed
FreeStyle™?

Dr.
Ben Feldman, a TheraSense chemist, developed a
coulometric method of glucose measurement which led to
the company's first product, the FreeStyle Blood Glucose
Monitoring System.
